But while you could make the argument that Dune to Children of Dune is a trilogy based on the time span of them, and therefore God Emperor is a separate thing and Heretics would be the start of a new trilogy, thematically and character arc wise it makes more sense to read them as three sets of twos: Paul's Arc, Leto II's arc, spoilers arc. I've heard it said that the publisher wanted it to be structured as trilogies (because trilogies is a thing) and perhaps Herbert wanted it to be like that as well. Practically the books are structured as three duologies - Dune/Dune Messiah, Children of Dune/God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune/Chapterhouse Dune. It's a bit weird to not read God Emperor if you've read Dune Messiah and liked it, is my opinion!
